Hearing from communities about climate change and healthy ageing

The Healthy Ageing in a Changing Climate team have been busy developing the project over the last eight months, and we wanted to share what we’ve been up to.

In December 2022, we brought policymakers and practitioners together in a workshop to discuss the policy challenges of climate change and its impact on healthy ageing and age-friendly cities and communities. We created a brief from the event which summarises the discussion and key issues raised.

Following on from this initial workshop, we have been holding workshops with people aged 60 and over to hear from them directly about climate change and healthy ageing. We discussed what climate change means to them and the impact that an increase in extreme weather events will have on them and their community. We also spoke about what currently exists and what is needed in future in their community to respond to extreme weather.

Community workshops

Our first workshop brought together an intergenerational community group at the Citadel in Leith, Scotland.

We then held a workshop at the Central Library Hub in Cardiff, Wales.

Our most recent workshop was at the Strand Community Hub in Rochdale, England.

Our final workshop will be held in June in Belfast, Northern Ireland. From each of these events, we are creating a short overview of the themes that came out of our discussions to share with the communities that we engaged with. The first overview from our workshop in Leith is now available on the publications page - keep an eye out for the others coming soon.
